Sunday River, just outside of
Bethel and tucked against the New Hampshire border, is a pleasant blend of
old New England tradition with modem ski facilities. Bethel is a typically
picturesque New England town, complete with white-steepled church and ivy-covered
prep school. The main street is lined with historic buildings, and the
village common is anchored by the 75-year-old Bethel Inn.
The Sunday River Ski Resort rises
six miles to the north, a 90-minute drive from the Portland airport and about
three-and-a-half hours from Boston. As you drive up the access road to the
base area, you see condominium
complexes, but they don’t assault you; they blend with the trees and hills.
The resort doesn’t have a main centre. Three separate base lodges—South
Ridge, Barker Mountain, and White Cap—provide basic cafeteria and sports shop
facilities. South Ridge Lodge is the hub, housing the ski school, the
corporate offices and a grocery store. The condo complexes are small centres to themselves, with most boasting an indoor or heated
outdoor pool, hot tubs and saunas. A sense of quiet results: the bustle of people
created by a town or central hub is dispersed into the condominiums.
